The following overview provides a comprehensive summary of Diflucan, shares most common cases of its application, lists down associated side effects and precautions important for every patient.

What is Diflucan

Diflucan represents a prescription medication applied for treatment of fungal infections symptoms. Diflucan can be administered on its own or in combination with other drugs. Diflucan originates from a group of drugs referred to as antifungals.

DIFLUCAN (fluconazole) is applied to treat the following:

  • Esophageal and oropharyngeal candidiasis. Various studies have proven efficiency of Diflucan for the treatment of peritonitis, Candida urinary tract infections, systemic Candida infections (e.g., disseminated candidiasis, candidemia, pneumonia etc.)
  • Cryptococcal meningitis. Prior to prescribing Diflucan (fluconazole) to AIDS patients who also have cryptococcal meningitis, it is important to have a thorough consultation with specialized healthcare practitioner
  • Diflucan can also be taken to reduce the occurrence of candidiasis in patients who undergo transplantation of bone marrow and receive radiation therapy and/or cytotoxic chemotherapy

Due to a faster oral absorption, it is suggested to keep the daily dosage of oral Diflucan (suspension and tablets) similar to intravenous treatment dosage. Generally, a loading dose of 2 times a day is advised for the initial therapy to cause plasma concentrations start approaching a steady state by day 2 of the therapy.

The daily Diflucan dosage to cure infections excluding vaginal candidiasis, are dependent on the infecting organism itself as well as the response of patient to treatment. Treatment is required to go on until laboratory tests or clinical parameters confirm that active fungal infection has diminished. An improper treatment period may cause infection to recur.
